First, understand that manufacturing has changed significantly in the last three decades. Manufacturers are more automated these days, which has opened up opportunities for greater numbers of quality-control specialists, robotic and machine programmers/operators, and other positions requiring advanced skills or knowledge.
This does not mean that you need to go to a four-year university. Often a certification program or two-year degree from a community college is all that’s needed. And many manufacturers are willing to hire for entry level positions and – if employees show commitment and a willingness to learn – will train them for roles with increasing levels of responsibility. Those entry-level positions require that employees be dependable, able to work on a team, and communicate effectively.
